As usual, I’m writing my ‘Currently Reading’ blog post that contains fully read books and books I’m in the process of reading. You can also check out all my past reviews here.
Reign of Shadows, by Sophie Jordan
This book is billed as a re-imagining of Rapunzel, so of course I had to read it. And let me tell you, there is a major unexpected plot point pretty early on in the book that I thought was genius. GENIUS! I really loved Luna’s character and though she was very well rounded and not the typical damsel in distress. The last fourth of the book wasn’t as awesome to me as the rest of the book, but don’t let that stop you from reading it. Overall it’s a great, easy read.
Wink Poppy Midnight by April Genevieve Tucholke
WHAT. WHAT! WHAT? I read the first chapter of this book months ago as a preview during the marketing push for Wink Poppy Midnight. So I’ve been waiting months for it. Let me tell you. If you’re an older reader of YA who may remember reading anything by Francesca Lia Block in their teens and loved Block…. this book is for you. The style so reminded me of Block’s work (Dangerous Angels, anyone?). And the mystery! And suspense! And magic and fairytales! And teenage angst! Ahhhh! It was like being 16 and reading Weetzie Bat again. Loved every bit of this book. It’s even inspired me to read some of my old Block books again.
Marked in Flesh by Anne Bishop
So I’m only about a third of the way through this book. I had hoped I’d be further along by the time I wrote this post. But I LOVE this world Bishop has built. I loved it from the first Novel of the Others when I couldn’t get the description of chamomile cookies out of my head (and subsequently baked my own said chamomile cookies). I really like how new parts of the world are being brought in this time around, along with new characters. I am a little worried that Meg is taking a backseat to the other happenings in the book, but I’m only a third of the way in, so it could just be that Bishop is laying the groundwork for Meg to step into the stoplight further into the book. We’ll see!
The Great Hunt by Wendy Higgins
This is the one book I haven’t read yet. But need to very soon because it’s a library book with a due date. ;) But along the same lines as ‘Reign of Shadows’, this book is fairytale inspired. Bascilly there is an evil beast that the king wants dead, so he announces that whoever kills the beast will win his daughters hand in marriage.
For those of you wondering what books are next up on my list (in no particular order):
Have you read any of my January reads? What did you think? Let me know in the comments!
